Let's be real: Learning an instrument as an adult is tricky. It's often intimidating, involves questionable noises, and sometimes you just want to giggle about it. That's where the Coronado Terrible Orchestra comes in.

What We Are (And Are Not):

  1. We ARE: A welcoming, adults-only (18+) group dedicated to beginner-level instrumentalists. Seriously, if you haven't played since 5th grade or just bought your first cello, you're in the right place.

  2. We ARE: A safe, zero-judgment zone for experimentation, error, and epic amounts of silly fun. We encourage growth, but we prioritize the good time.

  3. We ARE NOT: A high-pressure, competitive, or frankly, good orchestra. If you're looking for Carnegie Hall, this ain't it. If you're looking for a laugh and to finally play that thing in the corner, welcome home.

What to Expect:

  1. Safety First, Mistakes Always: We guarantee you'll make mistakes. We also guarantee no one cares. We are here to learn and grow, and that process is delightfully messy.

  2. Silliness Encoded: If you take yourself too seriously, this might be tough. We believe a well-timed bad joke is just as important as a correctly played D-major scale.

  3. Real, Measurable Progress: Despite the name, we do get better. You'll learn to read music, improve your technique, and build confidence—all while enjoying the journey with others who are equally "terrible" (for now!).

Forget the pressure. Grab your instrument. Let's make some beautifully awful music together.

Coronado Terrible Orchestra FAQ:

Eligibility & Experience

Q: Who can join the Coronado Terrible Orchestra?

A: We are exclusively for adult (18+) beginner musicians in the San Diego area, especially those in Coronado, CA. Our atmosphere is fun, safe, and judgment-free—you just need a desire to play and have a good time!

Q: What is the minimum experience required to join the CTO?

A: We encourage players who have had at least one year of experience with their instrument, or those returning to an instrument after a long break. You should be familiar with basic note reading and your instrument's handling. We love learning, but we're not an "absolute zero" tutorial.

Q: I'm worried I'm still "terrible." Should I wait until I'm better?

A: Absolutely not! "Terrible" is in our name for a reason—it's a celebration of the messy, noisy, and silly process of learning. Our goal is safe, fun, and low-stakes musical growth. If you make a mistake, we will all laugh... and then keep playing. Come be terrible with us!

Instruments & Repertoire

Q: Which instruments are welcome in the orchestra?

A: We welcome all orchestral instruments! If you've got it, bring it. This typically includes:

  • Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass (and we love enthusiastic string players!)

  • Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone

  • Brass: Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Tuba

  • Percussion/Keyboards: Piano, Keyboard, Percussion (Timpani, Snare, Mallets)

If your instrument isn't listed, just ask! We are creative with arrangements to include everyone.

Q: What kind of music does the Coronado Terrible Orchestra play?

A: We select fun, accessible, and often simplified arrangements across various genres. Think movie themes, light classics, pop, and holiday favorites. The goal is enjoyment and building fundamental orchestral skills, not tackling Mahler.

Logistics & Location

Q: Where does the Coronado Terrible Orchestra rehearse?

A: We hold our rehearsals right here at the Coronado Community Center. Sessions run 6-weeks at a time to encourage bite-sized commitment every Wednesday from 7-9pm.

Q: Are there auditions?

A: No! We do not believe in auditions. We believe in showing up, being silly, and playing your instrument.
